What IS A CERAMIC COATING & WHAT DOES IT DO?

What is a ceramic coating?

Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer applied to the exterior of a vehicle, providing a protective layer over the paint. It chemically bonds with the factory paint, creating a semi-permanent shield that doesn’t wash away or break down like traditional waxes or sealants.

What does a ceramic coating do?

  • Protection from Elements: Ceramic coatings offer superior protection against environmental contaminants like dirt, bird droppings, acid rain, UV rays, and chemicals. This helps prevent oxidation, fading, and staining.

  • Hydrophobic Properties: The coating makes the surface water-repellent. Water beads up and rolls off easily, carrying dirt with it, which makes the vehicle easier to clean and reduces the chances of water spots or streaking.

  • Enhanced Gloss and Shine: Ceramic coatings provide a deep, glossy finish that enhances the vehicle’s paint, giving it a showroom-like shine that lasts much longer than wax.

  • Scratch Resistance: While it doesn’t make the car scratch-proof, it does add a level of resistance to minor scratches and swirl marks that can occur during regular washing or exposure to light abrasions.

  • Longevity: Ceramic coatings can last anywhere from 3 to 7 years or more, depending on the quality of the product used and the level of maintenance.

How long does a ceramic coating take to do?

The time it takes to apply a ceramic coating to a vehicle can vary depending on the condition of the car’s paint,  and the level of prep work required. Here's a general breakdown:

1.  Preparation Stage

  • Wash and Decontamination: Before applying the ceramic coating, the vehicle must be thoroughly washed and decontaminated to remove dirt, grease, iron particles, and other contaminants. This can take 1–2 hours.

  • Paint Correction (if needed): If the paint has swirls, scratches, or oxidation, paint correction may be necessary to ensure a flawless finish. This can take anywhere from 2 to 8 hours or more, depending on the severity of the imperfections.

2. Application Stage

  • Applying the Ceramic Coating: The actual application of the ceramic coating typically takes 1 to 2 hours. It’s applied in sections, allowing time for each area to be evenly coated and buffed.

3. Curing Time

  • Initial Curing: After application, the ceramic coating needs time to cure, which usually takes around 1–2 hours before the car can be touched or lightly handled.
  • Full Curing: The coating continues to cure over the next 24 to 48 hours. During this time, the vehicle should ideally be kept out of the elements (rain, direct sun) to ensure proper bonding.
  • Complete Bonding: While most coatings feel cured after 48 hours, the chemical bonding process may continue for up to 7 days. During this period, washing the car is typically discouraged.

Total Time:

  • Without Paint Correction: 4 to 6 hours (prep + coating).
  • With Paint Correction: 6 to 12 hours or more, depending on the condition of the paint.
